Why do injuries accelerate the formation of arthritis?

Vero Beach, Fl. Chiropractor- Degenerative change occurs naturally in the spine as we age. Arthritis is the most common form of this change. Injury is the most common way to make degeneration occur more quickly. I look at current x-rays of someone’s spine and see a spot that has been injured in the past due to the arthritis in that one area. I’ll ask the patient, what traumatic event occurred a decade or two ago? Often, a car accident is the culprit and the whip lash injury was not treated properly. The degeneration that occurs at the injured spot will happen faster and usually only in that particular area. Degenerative joint disease and degenerative disc disease are the technical names of this type of change. Years later, the arthritis that is a result of an improperly treated whip lash, now causes nerve and spinal disc problems. These problems can give neck pain that will radiate into the shoulder or arm. A chiropractor can help with these types of symptoms. Dr. Thomas Harmody is a chiropractor at Vero Walk-In Chiropractic.
