Why do I feel worse when a hurricane passes by our state?

Chiropractor Vero Beach, Fl.- Hurricanes are a pretty normal thing here in Florida each summer and are especially used to them here in Vero.  I personally remember David, Erin, Gene and Frances were all direct hits.  Hurricanes are extremely low pressure, organized weather complexes.  When the pressure is so low as to cross below the 900mb range, it always seems to stir up areas in the body that are problematic.  This low pressure allows inflammatory enzymes to leach out into the body and they tend to inflame previously injured areas.  Therefore, pain levels tend to increase and make the area feel worse.  Whether it is a back, knee or hip that have been injured in the past, the low pressure can stir up old pain sites and make them hurt again.  Ice is a great way to combat this along with foods that are anti-inflammatory such as pineapple or turmeric.  So, this week when the storm passes just off our coast into the panhandle, you might feel some areas that become painful again.  Dr. Thomas Harmody is a chiropractor at Vero Walk-In Chiropractic and Wellness in Vero Beach, Fl.
