What does a chiropractor actually do?
Chiropractor Vero Beach, Fl.- Let’s say a person comes into me with a complaint of a stiff neck. Pretty sure we have all had this. You sleep in an odd position and wake up the next morning not able to turn your head. That odd position often turns a vertebrae or two into an extreme position where the joint is at its end range of motion. This irritates the joint and causes swelling within the capsule of cartilage that surrounds the joint. This swelling then inflames the nerve that resides at that level of the spine. This irritation causes the muscles in area to spasm and prevent you from moving your head. Why? So, you don’t irritate the nerve any further. It’s a chiropractor’s job to seek out this area where the nerve is irritated and induce motion into that joint relieving the irritation. By restoring the normal range of motion at that joint level will reduce the swelling in the joint capsule, taking pressure off the nerve. The nerve irritation reduces which then relaxes the muscles in the area. This relieves the pain induced by those spasms. By reducing the spasms, you are now able to turn your head. This is all fancy terminology for saying we are helping the “pinched nerve.” Dr. Thomas Harmody is a chiropractor at Vero Walk-In Chiropractic in Vero Beach, Fl.
